EAST ANGLIA SECTION

Following the excellent social evening held at the home of Robert and Enid Baines, our next Section event will be the technical meeting at the home of Mary and Peter Young in Chelmsford on Sunday the 14th of March. As requested in last month’s Jowetteer, those wishing to attend should have already contacted Mary, but it may still be possible to book a place if you act at once - but please be advised that numbers are limited. Very soon I will circulate all East Anglia members with a menu and booking form for our spring Section lunch to be held on the 25th of April at Pleshey in Essex. As yet your committee have not finalised our summer meetings programme, but I will keep you informed through these pages. Looking forward to meeting you during the summer -Chris Lane

NORTH WEST SECTION

The post-Christmas lunch was held at Sutton Hall at the end of January. The only formal event was the presentation of an engraved glass tankard (and something to go in it!) to the Hon. Ed. in recognition of his ten years as Editor of Jowetteer. The presentation was made on behalf of the Club by the national Chairman, Tim Brown. Needless to say the tankard was soon christened! We were then made to work by attempting to answer the questions in Alan’s quiz. Tim then showed some cine films of vintage events taken over twenty years ago. The cars look the same - but not the people!

Future Events: Sunday, March 28th - Visit to Derwent Valley Visitor Centre at Belper Mill. The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site stretches from Matlock Bath to Derby. Meet at the Visitor Centre car park at 12noon. Directions: From Derby or Mattock, turn off the A6 onto the A5 17 at the traffic lights about half a mile north of Belper town centre. The car park is filly yards on the right, just past the mill. From Ashbourne, take A517 to Belper; the mill is immediately after a sharp right bend (brown tourist sign-posted). We will eat at a local hostelry at 12.30, and the tour of the Visitor Centre will start at 2.30.

Sunday, April 25 - Dorothy Clive Gardens, on the AS I between Stone and Nantwich. (again, brown tourist sign-posted); meet in the lower car park at 10.30. We will be eating at The Swan with Two Necks at approximately 1 .3Opm. -Doris Whitney

SEVERNSIDE SECTION

I would just like to send my apologies for my February report; Alan tells me that he didn’t receive my e-mail so I guess it must have gone into cyberspace instead. Anyway, a big ‘Thank You’ to all who came to the Severnside lunch - it was lovely to see you all (you know who you are!). The Bristol Classic was a big success: Pat Locker brought his Farina. David Morris’s report with a picture has been sent separately; thank you Pat and David for all your hard work.

Last night there was a ring on our door bell and we had an unexpected visitor; his name is John Lockington, and he was the secretary for Severnside Section in the ‘eighties. He is moving house and has a few spares to dispose of so he wondered if we would like them (Obi is very pleased) - so you can guess that they are for a Javelin! Anyway, we talked about all things Jowett until about 1100pm. It’s nice to know there are still people out there who remember us. Obi’ s Javelin is very near to completion - York here he comes!

John has at last got a new gearbox for for Kevi; it’s not very good in reverse but okay otherwise, so we can at last get her back on the road. Watch this space, because in the next three or four weeks we shall have MY(!) (Eve) Jupiter home, and then the real work will begin. Wish us luck.! That’s all for now, see you soon - God Bless... -DanutaMorgan

NORTHERN SECTION

Another month when I’m stuck for something to say! It’s that “waiting time” for the season to get underway. No doubt the recent spring-like weather has encouraged the male species out into the garage to check that the anti-freeze has done itsjob, and ensure the car is ready for its MoT, etc. If not - get a move on...

Our Valentine Lunch on 15th February was a most pleasant outing - such a pity we only had twenty-four members present (maybe a lot of you were already getting started on your cars as per my comments above?).

Next on our agenda is the Dales Run to Settle for High Tea at the Falcon Manor Hotel - a nice annual event, and this year it’s on 4th April. Do please contact David

Midgley (01535 602 234) to book your meal. There’s nothing yet ‘sorted’ for our Easter

Egg Run on 11th April, but keep the date free and details will be in the next issue (and announced at the Falcon Manor).

The annual CD Run to Hawes will be on 23rd May this year (a little later in the month than normal) - usual format, meet at Morrison’s, Idle around 1000am, and depart at your leisure for a good day out.

At the time of writing, I have no further entry forms to hand but if anyone has news of any new events please let me know. Finally - 1st Tuesday every month: ‘Shoulder of Mutton’, Northowram - Noggin’n’Natter. See you there. -Pauline Winleringham

930am, finishing Hawes at the upper car park as usual.

Every year the same faces help and new blood is also welcome.

I have passes booked for the Gifford Transport Groups Edinburgh Festival of Transport event on the 30th of May at Silverknows Promenade off Marine Drive, so if any members want to give the cars a shake down before York let me know. -John Johnstone

MIDLANDS SECTION

Although we are in the depths of winter there is not a lot of snow about, so the Midlands Section decided to find some. Leaving the Jowetts in the garage, we travelled to Antarctica for our February meeting via a DVD presented by Midlands member Peter Tribble. Britain’s part in the International Geographical Year of 1956 was to set up a study in Antarctica. Peter’s father was a member of the British Antarctica Expedition. He was a meteorologist who also looked after the radar. Converted Grimsby trawlers and Ferguson tractors with snow tracks fitted set the scene and took us back to the days when the expedition teams of this nature were men only, and the only entertainment were films which were shown every Saturday night. On expeditions like these where every item had to be carried from England and every member of the team had to be a specialist in his field, and where even the dog was something special, planning and leadership to make life interesting and bearable was essential. The films which Peter had put together to make the DVD using a commentary recorded by his late father, gave us a realistic view of the expedition and some idea of life in Antarctica, including that of the natural inhabitants - penguins of course - and the whole film made a good evening’s viewing.

We held our Annual Lunch at the West Midlands Golf Centre. This was an excellent location. Midlands members were joined by members from the Severnside, Northern, and North Western Sections and guests. The event was a great re-union of fellow Jowetteers and there was lots of lovely conversation and banter. The President’s Plate was presented to Pam Charlesworth for her contribution to the Section and to the Club. Frank Cooke, who was looking well after his cruise, was celebrating his 84th birthday, and we gave a good rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’. A good time was had by all.

Apologies for the non-appearance of the January report. The plans for the 2004 Rally progressed at committee meetings on 5th January and 2nd February, while monthly social meetings at the ‘Wheatsheaf’, Hutton Rudby, took place on 8th January and 12th February, the latter attended by five members

The January Sunday lunch, organised by Al Kraus, was enjoyed by thirteen members and guests who gathered at the Marton Country Club on 18th January — the Section is indebted to Al for organising this enjoyable event.

The next ‘noggin & natter’ evening will take place at the ‘Wheatsheaf’ at 08.OOpm on 11th March. -PeterJ Welch

I hear from Ian (Roxburgh? -Ed.) that our new member John Prideaux, who Ian met in New Zealand, is now in California and is searching for a Javelin - so here is a chance to show off your world-wide connections: if anyone knows of a Javelin for sale in California, please let John know.

I am afraid that since moving before Christmas my Javelin restoration has been resting in a barn that Ian has kindly made available. I do, however, have every intention of getting it on the road this year (how about that for a public commitment!). As I have said before, watch this space... EVENTS:

Sunday, 2nd May - London-Brighton Historic Commercial Vehicle Run Sat.-Mon., 29th-3 1st May - Loughton Essex Spring Fair (01323 811264). -Roger Cross
